Gods as Seasons.
According to Greek mythology, the Seasons (Greek, Horae), daughters of Zeus and Themis and attendants to the greater deities, were closely connected with vegetation. In another ancient tradition, principally Roman, which was revived in Renaissance painting, other gods and goddesses symbolized the four seasons of the year: Flora, goddess of flowers, and her consort Zephyr are often spring, as are the resurrection stories of Adonis and of Proserpine (Persephone); the vegetation deities Ceres and Pomona are commonly summer; Bacchus, as god of the vintage, is frequently autumn; Vulcan, god of fire, and Saturn, patron of the midwinter Saturnalia festival, are winter.
