The son of Aristaeus and Autonoe and the grandson of Cadmus, Actaeon stumbled upon Artemis at her woodland bath. Enraged at the offense to her chastity, Artemis splashed Actaeon with water, transforming him into the quarry he was himself seeking.

Actaeon is shown here in the form of a stag, as his own dogs attack him all around. Artemis watches more or less dispassionately.
