Jean Jouvenet, "Apollo and Tethys," 1695, painting....

Jouvenet 5 years later painted the scene of Apollo leaving Tethys for the apartment of Mme de Maintenon in the Grand Trianon.

Mythological scene: Apollo in his chariot, with a goddess and a fallen figure below, and a cherub in the sky

Dezallier d'Argenville: "L'Océan personnifié qui verse ses eaux; Thétis accompagnée de ses Nymphes reçoit dans ses bras Apollon sortant de son char dont les chevaux vont se plonger dans les eaux de l'Océan." (cited in Schnapper p. 198)
