Staged within Antonio Verrio's (1697-1699) décor of The Heaven Room (pretending to be Windsor Castle), Charles' perspective of his wife uses Verrio's depiction of Venus and Mars caught by Vulcan flagrante delicto; behind Charles, Diana sees Verrio's depiction of the Cyclopes' forge. In their Baroque splendor, the mythological wall paintings inform the scene, making the royal adulterers equivalent to the gods and delivering a pathetic critique of Charles' cuckolding.
