Diana here is depicted as a celestial figure, the equivalent of Selene (the moon); but she is also the huntress, accompanied by a hind.

Disney artists have employed traditional iconography for Diana, expanding it however to bow the crescent moon into the shape of her weapon. Certainly a conflation of Artemis with Selene, the moon goddess. Reid (p. 216) states that "As a goddess of the night, Artemis became identified [classically] with the moon goddess, Selene (Luna)."

One might think of Horace's Carmen Saeculare, but of many other classical descriptions of Artemis/Diana as Selene.
