Artemis of Ephesus, Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, inv. 6286

The Naples Artemis of Ephesus wears a mural crown, a headdress like a turreted city wall. This is a symbol of her power over municipalities, particularly Ephesus.

ML p. 230: Alabaster and bronze, mid-second century A.D. The Ephesian Artemis continues the ancient tradition of he goddess as protectress of nature (Potnia Theron) — seen in the rows of animals heads on her robe, sleeves, breastplate, and head-disk-and revives her original connection with fertility, shown by the multiple breast like objects. (Others take the objects to represent testicles of sacrificial bulls)
