John Bradley Storrs, 1885-1956, "Ceres" 1928, architectural sculpture in copper alloy plated with nickel statue atop the Chicago Board of Trade Building; replica curated at the Art Institute of Chicago.

The Board of Trade is where crop futures are bought and sold. To mark this Storrs crowned the iconic Chicago skyscraper with the image of the Greek goddess of the agricultural fertility. The futuristic Art-Deco sculpture merges the idea of agricultural prosperity with classical tradition and reflects the economic prosperity of the time in the optimism inherent in crop futures.
Storrs' narrative gain is apparent in the the goddess' right hand. The sack of money she holds is a divergence from classical iconography. Since the Greek conception of classical Demeter's activity rarely/never has the commercial aspect as here, Storrs has made the goddess a newly Americanized/commercialized entity.
