The mischief caused among gods and mortals by the wanton arrows of Eros (Cupid) gave rise in the Hellenistic period to the theme of his punishment at the hands of his mother, Aphrodite (Venus), or others. In postclassical depictions Aphrodite may be seen spanking the boy with a rose branch or confiscating his arrows. The theme is often presented as an allegory of mischief or vice punished by virtue or chastity; here, Athena (Minerva), nymphs of Artemis (Diana), or the Graces are found reprimanding the undisciplined child. These scenes commonly show Eros deprived of his arrows, having his wings clipped, or tied to a tree.
