Hyginus Fabulae, 178 Europa.

Europa was the Sidonian daughter of Argiope and Agenor. Jupiter transformed himself into a bull and carried her away from Sidon to Crete, and conceived with her Minos, Sarpedon, and Radama[n]thus. 2. Her father Agenor sent his sons to bring their sister back, or they should not return to his sight. Phoenix went to Africa and remained there; thus the inhabitants of Africa are called Poeni (Punics). Cilix bestowed his own name upon Cilicia. (4) Cadmus was wandering and came to Delphi. There he received the oraclular response to purchase from cowherds a cow bearing the sign of the moon on its flank then to drive it ahead of himself; when the cow should lie down to rest, he should by oracular decree found a city and rule there. (5) Cadmus heard the prophecy and, when he had done as commanded, he was one day seeking water and came to the Castalian spring which a serpentine dragon, the son of Ares, was guarding. When this creature had killed Cadmus' companions, Cadmus killed it with a rock. He sowed its teeth and cultivated the crop as instructed by Minerva. The Spartoi were born from this sowing. These Spartoi fought among themselves; and only five of them survived, namely Chthonius, Udaeus, Hyperenor, Pelorus, and Echion. From the cow (bous), however, which he had pursued, Boeotia derives its name.
