Manship includes elements of American art and archaic Greek art in this pairing, as he customarily does. In particular, Manship's hunter is draped in an animal skin that boldly recalls the Nemean Lion's skin that identifies Heracles so preeminently. Whether that identification turns the pronghorn into a Cyreneian Hind is hard to say.
Manship designed smaller scale pair for placement on his mantlepiece; commissioned to craft the larger version for garden landscaping, Manship made these plaster models (at the Joslyn)for the casting of the larger set. Copies of the small set are the Metropolitan Museum of Art, at the Chicago Art Institute, The Smithsonian American ARt Museum, Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, and elsewhere.
