Neptune and Apollo are said to have girt Troy with a wall. To them king Laomedon vowed that he would sacrifice whatever sheep was born in his kingdom that year. However, out of greed, he overlooked the vow. Other sources say that he had promised too little.
On account of his broken vow, Neptune sent a sea-monster to ravage Troy; and the king therefore sent to consult the oracle of Apollo. Apollo was angered and responded thus: If the maiden daughters of the Trojans should be tied up, an end to the plague should occur. (3) When numerous maidens had been devoured and the sister of Hesione had come out and had been tied to the rock, Hercules and Telamon came along with the Argonauts bound for Colchis and killed the sea-monster, they returned Hesione to her father under a bound agreement that upon their return they would take her away with them to their own home — they also demanded the horses that were browsing over the water and the grain. This thing also Laomedon cheated them in, nor did he wish to give Hesione back. Therefore, Hercules prepared his ships against them and came to sack Troy; he killed Laomedon and granted the kingdom to Laomedon's infant son Podarcis, who was later known as Priam ἀπὸ τοῦ πρίασθαι (from his having been purchased). He recovered Hesione and married her to Telamon, and from her was born.
