Mythologically, Linus (Λίνος) is the son of Amphimarus or Apollo and a Muse (Calliope fits his Linus' musical bent, but Urania is most commonly the mother, sometimes Terpsichore). Two death myths of Linus are told: a) When he challenged Apollo at musical performance, the god killed him; b) When he was teaching the young Heracles, he tried to use force upon the demigod who retaliated by killing his instructor. Other myths make Linus the brother of Orpheus or the son of Hermes.
