Ulee is a bee-keeper who cultivates with especial care the finest Tupelo honey. He was the only survivor of his platoon to return from Vietnam alive, and his deceased wife's (Penelope) absence has left him managing a nearly broken family. The stressors of taking in the annual crop of golden honey conflict with a crisis in the family that might have broken a lesser man.

Peter Fonda won a Golden Globe for his acting in this film; and a young Jessica Biel delivers a very sensitive performance of Cassidy.
