Raoul Verlet (1857-1923), “La Douleur d’Orphée,” bronze original 1900, destroyed in the German Occupation of Paris 1943; a miniature (82 cm) cast by Fonte Barbedienne replicates the original.

Verlet's Orpheus is caught in the moment of loss, his lyre fallen at his feet and his stride surmounting the barrier between death and life which Cerberus guards.
