Onofrio Buccini (with collaboration of F. Jerace), "La Fontana della Sirena," 1869. Now transplanted 1924 from Mergellina station to the Piazza Sannazaro, Naples, the largest public space of sufficient size to feature the memorial to Naples' original namesake.

Parthenope provides specific identity for at least one of the Sirens. The myth is that she was a chaste Phrygian girl who suffered the wrath of Aphrodite. Failing to entice Odysseus, she leapt into the sea and drowned. Apollodorus says this was fulfillment of prophecy. Her body was washed ashore on the reef of San Leonardo at Mergellina. … Now, it was predicted of the Sirens that they should die themselves when a ship should pass them; so die they did.”
The ancient city of Naples, Parthenopea, was named after her. Neapolis (the “new city”) was the name of the new settlement after the population center was moved away from the coast and up onto the hill.

Frazer’s note ad loc “This is not mentioned by Homer, but it is affirmed by Hyginus Fab. 125, 141. Others said that the Sirens cast themselves into the sea and were drowned from sheer vexation at the escape of Ulysses. See Scholiast on Hom. Od. xii.39, Eustathius on Hom. Pausanias 9.34.3: an odd reference, since Pausanias is talking not about Naples, but Greece proper.
His story is about the daughters of Achelous vs. the Muses. Persuaded by Hera, the Sirens (the daughters of Achelous) compete with the Muses and lose. The Muses make themselves victors’ crowns from the Sirens’ plucked feathers.
According to Apollodorus (Lib. 2.7.11), Heracles mated with Parthenope, daughter of Stympalus, and had Everes.
