J. Wedgwood, Pegasus Vase, 1786, British Museum (gift of Josiah Wedgwood)

A large decorative vase with a lid, featuring classical white relief figures against a dark background, on a patterned base

Wedgwood himself gave this vase to the British Museum. Despite their policy to receive nothing of “contemporary manufacture”, they took this.

The Apotheosis of Homer (cat. 68) is depicted on the body of the vase. The Pegasuson the top enforces the apotheosis theme.
