Jean-Auguste=Dominique Ingres, 1780-1867, "Roger and Angelica" ("Perseus and Andromeda"), oil on canvas, study for the painting "Roger and Angelica", private collection Edinburgh.

This is a complicated listing, as Morgenthaler cites an 1819 "Perseus and Andromeda" at the Louvre; Reid cites merely this "study for the painting."

Google Arts and Culture includes a "Study for 'Roger Freeing Angelica' (1818) by Ingres, owned by Harvard Art Museums/Fogg Museum, the Bequest of Grenville L. Winthrop." (click) The image at right shows Ingres' "Andromeda saved by Ruggiero" as owned by the Louvre (from Wikpedia Commons). Thus, this page is merely a stub for piece in the private collection, Edinburgh, perhaps.

V. Morgenthaler cites this piece in Reception of Myth and Mythology s.v. "Perseus".

Erika Langmuir commented upon Ingres' "small version of 'Angelica saved by Ruggiero'" in the National Gallery, which is "Ingres' response to the female nude ... as charged with erotic longing and scarcely sublimated violence as Delacroix's." (National Gallery Companion Guide 296)
