This film is a loose re-telling of the Perseus/Medusa myth. It is mythology that has been repackaged and veneered to become more palatable to a modern audience with limited knowledge of or interest in classical mythology. As such, the character of Perseus is tweaked to more closely allign with modern ideals of heroism, while Medusa's backstory is virtually erased, casting her into the role of a generic monster that the hero must slay.
