Homer's Odysseus epically explains that Sisyphus is punished, emphasizing the boulder's return to the plain: "autis epeita pedonde kulindeto läas anaides." Subsequently classical authors explain variously why Sisyphus was punished: "When Zeus secretly carried off Aegina, the daughter of Asopus, Sisyphus is said to have revealed Zeus' crime to Asopus, who was looking for her." (Simpson, trans. Apoll. Bibl. 1.9.3; Other ancient authors attribute the punishment to Sisyphus' deception of his brother Salmoneus. Lost tragedies by Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides tell that Sisyphus outwitted Death for a time but later suffered eternal punishment for his overreach.
Albert Camus (1942) set a new benchmark for the Sisyphus myth, explaining that Sisyphus' ordeal defines "the Absurd". Condie's Sisyphus marks a remarkably innovative adaptation this important myth, a sort of watershed. And perhaps Green's book, published at the same press subsequently to Condie's series, manifests a secondary reception.
