Achilles, Return to Battle.
Alter the death of Patroclus, the grief-stricken Achilles was spurred to revenge. Thetis obtained a new shield and armor for her son from Hephaestus (Vulcan) and Achilles returned to battle, his quarrel with Agamemnon ended. Protected by Athena’s flaming aegis, he rushed into the fray and helped to rescue Patroclus’s corpse. In a battle on the banks of the river Scamander (Xanthus), Achilles slaughtered so many Trojans that the river-god begged him to stop because the corpses were obstructing its passage to the sea. When Achilles refused, the river overflowed and pursued him back to the plain of Troy.
