Gods as Elements.
The attributes and domains of classical deities were often used in Renaissance and Baroque art to symbolize the four Elements: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. Earth is commonly represented by deities such as Ceres (goddess of the harvest), Cybele (goddess of fertility), Flora (goddess of flowers), and Pluto (lord of the Underworld); Air, by Juno in her peacock chariot, Iris (the rainbow goddess), and Jupiter, whose attribute is the eagle; Fire, by Vulcan at his fiery forge, Vesta (keeper of the hearth), and Jupiter with his thunderbolts; Water, by Neptune (the sea-god) and his consort Amphitrite, or Venus’s birth and sea-triumph.
