Hyginus Mythographus, " on the Calydonian Boar Hunt" (Fabulae 171-74)
171. Althaea
Oeneus and Mars slept with Althaea, daughter of Thestius, on the same night; and, when Meleager was born from them, suddenly in the royal house appeared the Parcae — Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos. They foretold his fates to her thus: Clotho said that the child would be kindly, Lachesis that he would be strong, and Atropos spied a firebrand burning in the hearth and said "This child lives as long as this firebrand is not consumed." When Althaea heard this, she sprang from the bed and doused the firebrand and buried it in the middle of the house to keep it from being overtaken by fire.
172. Oeneus
Oeneus was the son of Porthaon and king of Aetolia. When he had performed the yearly sacrifices to all the gods and had neglected Diana, she was enraged and sent a boar of enormous size to lay waste the territory of the Calydonians.

174. Meleager
Althaea, the daughter of Thestius, conceived Meleager from Oeneo. Then, in the royal home a burning firebrand is said to have appeared. The Parcae came there and uttered the fates upon Meleager — that he would live as long as the firebrand was kept safe. Althaea then carefully kept it safe closed up in a box. Meanwhile, Diana's wrath — for Oeneus had not offered annual sacrifices to her — sent a gigantic boar to ravage the landscape of the Calydonians. When Meleager and chosen young men of Greece slew this, he gave its hide to the maiden Atalanta because of her courage; but Ideus, Plexippus, and Lynceus, the brothers of Althaea, wanted to steal it from her. When Atalanta begged for Meleager's trust, he got involved and put love before blood-relationship; he murdered his uncles. When his mother Althaea heard about this, i.e. that her own son had dared to perpetrate such a misdeed, she reflected on the prophecy of the Parcae, removed the firebrand from his protective box, and cast it into the fire. In this way, while she chose to pursue justice for her brothers, she murdered her son. Yet, all her sisters (except Gorga and Deianeira) in their lamentation were transformed into birds, the Meleagrides, by the will of the gods; but his wife, Alcyone, perished grieving in lament.
