Calydonian Boar Hunt.
When Meleager’s father, King Oeneus, offended Artemis (Diana) by failing to sacrifice to her, the goddess took revenge by setting a rampaging boar loose in the Calydonian countryside. Meleager called together many of the greatest heroes of Greece, including Theseus and Pirithous, Castor and Polydeuces (Pollux), Idas and Lynceus, Jason, Peleus, Telamon, and Admetus. The famous huntress Atalanta also joined them, and it was she who struck the boar first, after it had killed several young men. Meleager dealt the death-blow, then presented the boar’s head to Atalanta for having drawn first blood (or, according to some sources, because he had fallen in love with her). When two of Meleager’s uncles protested, claiming the head as their rightful booty, Meleager, flew into a fury and killed them both.
