NIOBE.
Daughter of Tantalus and wife of Amphion, Niobe was the mother of the Niobids, seven sons and seven daughters (or, according to Homer, six and six). She made the mistake of boasting that she was superior to Leto (Latona) because she had more children. Artemis (Diana) and Apollo, to avenge this insult to their mother, slew all of Niobe’s sons and daughters with their arrows. Niobe’s grief was unabating; she wept until she turned to stone. A spring flowing from a rock on Mount Sipylus was said to be her eternal tears. In the postclassical arts Niobe symbolizes both pride and sorrow.
