SYRINX.
A chaste Arcadian Hamadryad, Syrinx spurned the advances of satyrs and woodland spirits alike. In spite of this, Pan pursued her ardenty. She fled to the river Ladon, where she begged the Naiads to help her. As Pan reached for her, they transformed her into a stand of marsh reeds that sighed musically in the wind as he held them. He bound seven of the reeds together with wax to create the first panpipe, which he named syrinx. In postclassical works Syrinx often denotes the music of the spheres.
