Vertumnus.
A Roman god of fruit and orchards, probably of Etruscan origin, Vertumnus was able to assume many forms, such as plowman and reaper. To woo Pomona, the goddess of fruit, he assumed the form of an old crone who pressed his suit so eloquently that Pomona was finally persuaded to marry him. Vertumnus and Pomona are commonly depicted in postclassical art as personifications of vegetation, the harvest, and the fertile seasons.
