Death of Achilles.
The Trojan prince Paris lay in ambush for Achilles as the hero fought before the Scaean gate, the main northwest entry into the city of Troy. The dying Hector had prophesied that Achilles would be slain by a god and a hero, and now Paris, with Apollo’s aid, shot an arrow into the hero’s vulnerable heel, killing him. Achilles’ corpse was retrieved by Ajax after a fierce battle. He was given an elaborate funeral, mourned by the Grecian host and by his mother, Thetis.
In some medieval versions of the story, Achilles was ambushed while sacrificing to Apollo or while meeting with his beloved, Polyxena.
